NeverSeconds (English schoolgirl "Veg" shows us her lunches)

http://neverseconds.blogspot.com.es/

A young girl who publishes her blog under the codename Veg shows us her school lunches, along with ratings and any of her young girl rambles. It's very sweet, and not really the kind of blog you'd expect from a little girl in Scotland. Right on for not starting a fashion blog! Though, a blog about 9 year old girl fashions would be something close to amazing... too bad most UK schools have uniforms.

Anyways, this girl has already gone viral, so this post will mostly be old news to you. The Naked Chef is writing her praise! She's got children from around the world sending her school lunch pictures! That is actually what interested me most, the contrast between the lunches. One kid in Japan sent in his lunch, makes me wish I'd grown up in Japan!

Growing up in Toronto, Canada I never had school lunches... I'm not even sure my elementary school had the option. I lived a couple blocks from home and used to eat there every afternoon. Stuff like Mr. Noodle or microwavable curries from President's Choice, or my persona favourite, Michaelina's! My high school had the standard mostly gross selection, the best things were definitely the poutine and Greek salad. I used to frequent Tim Horton's and the Danforth for Greek fries (Sliced potatoes, feta, olive oil, oregano and lemon).

Take a look at some lunches from around the world...

So I'm just massively into this girl right now, I think she rocks and I wish I could be as good and relevant a food blogger as she. Little kids know how to do it.

London|Hackney|Pacific Social Club

I recently moved to Hackney Central, and not going to lie I was a little nervous about what sort of good stuff would be around, if any. Lucky for me, I was introduced to the Pacific Social Club on day 2 of my new Hackney life. It's situated right on the street where the heart of the Hackney portion of the London riots happened. Luckily for them, nothing was damaged, which is amazing, considering the corner store I'm sure you've heard a bit about is on the same block.

So, one morning we head over to the Pacific Social Club to meet my Mum's friend for coffee/brunch. It's a tiny little place, with old record slips pasted to the walls, retro booths and miss-matched tables and chairs. There's a chalk board with the menu, things like Grilled Grapefruit and all the coffees from Long Black to Flat White.

It was a good atmosphere, I want to go back.

I got a double latte and melted gouda w/ paprika and honey on toast, and my Mum got a double latte with the grilled grapefruit... here it is!

London|Morito|Tapas!

Morito, a mini-restaurant in Islington, London is the little sister to Moro. I've never been to Moro, but I have heard about it and everything that's been said has been good. My Dad and I once tried to make a reservation when he was in town, but there was nothing available for two until 10:45! So, we ended up at Quo Vadis (SoHo), eating calf brain and "bitter chocolate crunch" instead... no to shabby.

Anyways, my Mum and cousin were both in town two weeks ago, and we made plans for a lunch at Moro. Got there 12:15, it opened at 12:30... we were fine to wait, but as we embarked on a time-killing stroll we came across Morito right next door. It was already starting to bustle with eaters, maybe three of 8 tables full already? We looked at the menu, thought about it, considered it an option and continued our walk. Finally, we did go for the slightly cheaper, more casual and fun Morito.

We started with hard-boiled quails eggs with cumin and salt to sprinkle on top. It was on this day that I learned that quail eggs are in no way easy to peel, but once you get it done it's totally worth it.

Soon pureed beetroot with walnuts, refried chickpeas, aubergine, cauliflower, patatas all made their way to our little table.

The three of us came to the conclusion that we never knew that chickpeas could be so good.

My Dad has two of the Moro cookbooks at home, and I think I'll invest in one myself... I may or may not be on a personal mission to get my new flatmate in right food order - I seem to be doing alright, so far.

Oh yeah, and we got dessert and coffee too.

Just A Snap

En route to Joshua Tree from Los Angeles. Stopped for some ramen in a suburban mall food court, it was pretty good.

Malibu|Neptune's Net '12

If you've been to Malibu, and you like seafood, but you haven't been to Neptune's Net, then clearly you haven't got it together. Neptune's Net is basically a seafood-shack-on-the-beach straight from a film. Everything from the retro sign, to the bikers loitering outside... it's a real scene. You order fresh, steamed seafood from one end, and greasy, deep fried eats from another. You sit on communal benches and stare across the PCH to the beach and Pacific Ocean - v. nice.

I was in California end of December/early January, and got to Neptune's Net Jan 2. We had a great feast, I can still taste the super buttery steamed shrimp, ceviche, clam chowder and pile of deep fried sea creatures now. Let me visually reflect...

Christmas Day Dinner in Toronto

Hey there Ladies & Gents! How goes? Been a while, I know. I'm still useless at everything that I'm supposed to be useful for, like sharing my foodie endeavours with the world (Mummy), and pleasing my Mum by blogging! Hah!

On to other things... Well, I'm not sure about how your Christmas Dinner was, but mine, well, MINE was FABULOUS. There were things like scallops, caviar, cheeses, red cabbage, potatoes, goose, turkey (hell yeah, we had two birds) and Turkish Delight.

Construction of dinner began December 23rd, giving a good 2.5 days for things to go wrong, right and sideways. To tell you the truth I was almost useless on the 23rd and definitely the 24th (ahem, hangover). I did, however, become semi-slave to the kitchen on the 25th.

If you're interested in the Cooking Itinerary than please let your eyes glide down the post:

As you can see, my dad is a Master. He rarely fails. He did hiccup and forget to serve the cranberry sauce, but none of us noticed, so that was alright.

Here's the eats! Note: I don't really know how to use a DSLR, so please bare with me on the blurry scallops...

I Just Want Some Crayfish & Avocado

This detox has deprived me of the dish that I'm sure is what kept me going my last time in London, Pret A Manger's "Crayfish & Avocado". Why can't I have it, you ask? It's perfectly healthy you think to yourself. Well, ya, you're right... nothing wrong with it by any means my friends. However, shellfish? Banned. It seems that because this specific strand of seafood is not allowed, that everything I want includes it.

I'm also trying to sort out what to eat for dinner right now but have a relatively difficult time with my friend in New York BBMing me about Belgian french fries whilst I look at the Wagamamas menu and try to justify each possible dish. Run on sentence, but that's how I feel right now. Like a hungry, bread, chicken katsu, crayfish and double cream deprived rambler. Just ask my Mother, we spoke on the phone just now and I couldn't even tell you what we talked about there was so much word vomit.

I've had enough, I'm going on a food mission. Maybe if GRAB Thai Street Food is still open I'll get some congee, doubt it though. Apologies for a confused post.

It's Not So Bad

Wild Rose D-tox 3.5/12

So I'm just over a 1/4 of the way through my herbal detox, and so far it hasn't been too bad. I do have a bit of a heightened craving for those delicious croissants filled with bacon and cheese at Pret A Manger, and I do have a hard time looking at photos of my friends in Canada eating poutine without wincing a bit... But, other than that and my one late night slip up, all is well! Yeah, I said "slip up"... Wasn't really that bad though - just a chicken doner! Not much you can do when it's 3:00am and someone insists you have one (he didn't know I was on a cleanse, felt a little to shy to say... eek).

Though the D-tox booklet tells me to avoid eating out, there's not really much I can do about that seeing as I run to casting all day Mon-Fri. Luckily, it hasn't been difficult to find foods that fit within the guidelines, so I've managed to continue to eat quite well!

Here's what I've eaten since I last posted, minus a few that I ate before I remembered to photograph...oops.

"Salmon Teriyaki" from WASABI with a french bean/soy bean sesame salad and sticky rice.

"Salad Nicoise" from Pret A Manger with mixed greens, cucumber, tomatop, red onion, new potato, asparagus and egg. Dressed in balsamic vinaigrette

Rainbow chard fried in olive oil with red onions, garlic. Seasoned with chilli flakes, salt and pepper.
Chopped salad with red pepper, carrot, cucumber, tomato, chives, coriander and mint. Dressed in olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper.
