Now, Looky Here at What I've Got!

Remember the "Candy Meat" post from a little while back? Yeah, of course you do, how could you forget any of the crucial information on TMWAE? 

A couple days after I made the post, and also spoke about the "Candy Meat" on Twitter, I got an @reply from @felinewong. He told me that all I needed to do to be able to once again enjoy this snack was simply to go to Chinatown and by "Pork Jerky"! 

I hadn't had the time to go into any Chinese supermarkets and look for it until yesterday when my Dad and I went on a mega Tri-Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) grocery shopping spree - The reason for this will be given to you come Saturday - and, there it was, pork jerky!

Anyways, I haven't cracked it open yet, but I'm just so excited that I can't help but write a (potentially prematurely optimistic) happy-ending post.

Everyday Eats!

I owe my obsession of food to my Dad, he's a foodie in all ways. Not only does he love to eat, but he also loves to cook delicious meals. A lot of the time he makes the kitchen off limits to the rest of us, but sometimes I'm summoned into the kitchen to be his assistant.

Here's what I ate last week!

Chinese eggplant in a Thai yellow curry with coconut milk.

Grilled chicken with peanut sauce.

Who doesn't like to eat in the PJs? Pumpkin & lamb dumplings, to be dipped in a tempura sauce, rice vinegar, chive combo.

Bee Cheng Hiang|Shanghai, China (When Candy and Meat, Meet)

I'm not much of a meat eater, and when I do eat meat it tends to stay in the chicken-bacon-maybe fish category. This meat, or this candy as it should really be called comes in pork, chicken and beef - from what I've seen - and really is to die for. Dirt cheap, big, small, for now, for later, whatever you choose. The chicken coins are pretty damn good, but the pork squares conquer all. Your tastebuds have a party with every munch, it's ridiculous.


Unfortunately, deliveries are only available in Singapore.

I'm Still Here...

I've been slacking off lately, my apologies. I would whip out a fabulously delicious post about street food in Shanghai right now, but unfortunately it's 12:15AM and I need to get to sleep.

But here's a little image for your to drool over and dream about tonight...

Juliet's poutine experience, supplied by Julie's Food Experience via Sherpa's, was actually not a bad time. Would never have gone to this place (and I guess I didn't really "go") other than to have some sweet, sweet Montreal, Canadian poutine. 

On a scale of 1-10, comparing Julie's poutine to others, I would give it a 6/10. It's somewhere in between A&W's delicious but sickening poutine, and RHSA's mediocre but oh-so-nice-compared-to-the-caf's-chicken patties poutine. It's definitely nothing near as good at Smoke's Poutinerie, or Poutini's in Toronto, though. The conquer, all.

Food Fusion|Shanghai, China

Malaysian. Dead spicy. Fried carrot cake? Food Fusion is on the top floor of the Parkson department store at Huaihai Lu/Shaanxi Lu in Shanghai's French Concession. Who knew that department stores could have such great restaurants at the top of them? Note: Apparently Asia's department stores always have a fabulous restaurant or two at the top, according to my Dad. 

Came across Food Fusion while on a hunt for lunch with two Canadians, we climbed the escalators all the way up the whole 8 floors, wondering if it was even worth it. But boy, it was. My mouth may have been flaming the whole time, but there was something about those chicken skewers with their peanut sauce, that really just made me a happy girl.

About the fried carrot cake, unfortunately I can't totally remember the details, but it's pretty much what you think it is. Seemed like a questionable thing to order, but my fellow diner was luckily set on trying it. If I can find a photo online I'll post it, because I don't think I'll be able to make it back for a third meal before I leave.

Ice Kacang: Sweet corn, red bean, coconut jelly, rose jelly, ice cream, possibly something I'm forgetting, all served on ice. It was definitely an interesting sensation that thing made my mouth endure... I question the use of corn in desserts, I don't think "sweet" should be taken so seriously in the name sweet corn. But, that said, overall is was damn good and even though I probably will never eat it again... I would recommend you try some. 

Really upset that this new food concept didn't start three months ago. My Shanghai food stories would have bee far more interesting with visuals, and probably more accurate if I had written them day of.

Bon Appetite

Possibly one of the most offensive moments of my three months in Shanghai happened on a shoot for DAZZLE. Lunch time was nearing, and I was all to excited about my Chinese lunch box that was sure to be arriving any moment. The lunchboxes are usually the highlight of my jobs here in China. Only a couple times have they not been good, and even then, I'm still thankful I have that instead of McDonalds...

But anyways, back to the story. It's now lunch time and I see bags of Chinese food arriving, followed by... a pizza box? 'A pizza? For who?' ran through my head 'Which confused person would ask for pizza?'. Next thing I know, pizzas on the table, I'm being summoned, the pizza's for me and the other models, it has corn on it.

The fact that I was served pizza was confusing to me, and also relatively hurtful. Do you really think I want to eat pizza? Do you just assume that Western models don't like Chinese food, and that we want to eat pizza... in China? The other two models on the other-hand, were completely over-joyed that they scored a pizza that day for lunch.


 "You want... Chinese food?" one asked, "Hell yes, I do."

That whole lunch experience, however small, really got to me. I felt discriminated against to a certain extent. It's rude to assume that because I'm white and "American" (not even) that all I eat is pizza, McDonalds, KFC (which some people think I want for breakfast), and drink pop.

Hopefully this blog will make certain people realize that some models actually eat, enjoy food, and like to try cuisines that differ from our own.

Ting Bu Dong

Hello! It's nearing Glee time, but I thought I'd just quickly pop in, say nihao, and leave you with a few pictures to laugh at...

That lil blue gooey dude you see above likes to make himself known all over Shanghai. You probably see him five or six times a day. It's kind of sad though, he seems to be making the same unhappy smile every time, poor guy. Maybe he just wasn't cut out for the advertising life?

JUS' SUM UPDATES 4 U

SO, haven't really told y'all wha gwan or anything... 

I've been in China about five weeks so far, and I've got 53 more days to go! My Mum and Lil Bro flew over here with me and chilled for 10 days. Those first 10 days went really well, I booked my first casting and worked four of the ten days! I thought that this meant that I would work well here, but nope, it was a lie. I haven't worked for a month, no one has even liked me at castings... I had a meltdown a couple days ago and almost gave up and came home. But, low and behold, the next day I was told I had to fly to Xiamen to do a "big catalog". This "big catalog" I would like you to know, has been postponed to an unknown later date because the clothes haven't arrived...

Other stories, once my taxi driver fell asleep at the wheel and somehow thought that either I didn't notice or maybe it's something he does everyday, I've been a hostess and a bar/restaurant a couple times (trying to make the resume impressive) which has been good times, I've been so bored that I'm taking online school, I have a Coco loyalty card because I just love bubble tea that much, one of my fellow PT Models made a horror movie that all of us had to start in, I went to Tongli (a little canal town) and melted, I've discovered Hulu and I'm now addicted to... Glee.

C'EST LA VIE

SITTING in C'est La Vie right now, it's a small French style cafe right in People's Park. I've snagged the best seat, the one that has the huge windows that start at the floor to makes you feel as though your practically in the rainforest. My food has just arrived, a warm goat cheese and ham salad - my fav - and a latte. I should probably start doing my homework for my online course but I'm not feeling quite so motivated right now. So, maybe in a little bit...
